KM21 Mickey Yang’s exhibition “Upaya”

Mickey Yang’s exhibition “Upaya” at KM21 offers a unique look at the interpretation of Asian philosophies and spiritual practices within the Western pursuit of self-development, with a touch of humor. This first museum solo by Yang focuses on craftsmanship, language and cultural appropriation. In her installations she combines robust materials such as wood and metal with ephemeral effects such as smoke and reflections, resulting in a captivating and multi-dimensional experience. The exhibition highlights the ways in which Western interpretations of Eastern philosophies can be both profound and sometimes ironic, exemplified by everyday objects such as a plasma sphere, a mosquito coil and the sound of a singing bowl.
