The office building Valina in Amsterdam was completely renovated in 2014 and repositioned as a modern, sustainable, and future-proof office. Commissioned by Bouwinvest, the building was thoroughly renovated with the primary goal of improving light, transparency, user comfort, and energy performance. The building’s main tenant is WPG Publishers, for whom a pleasant and inspiring work environment is essential.

The renovation design was handled by OeverZaaijer, who gave Valina a completely new appearance. One of the most striking interventions is the new facade. By applying modern curtain walls, the building gained an open and transparent character, with abundant daylight entry and visual connection between inside and outside. This not only contributes to the building’s appearance but also to the well-being and comfort of its users.

In addition to the facade, the building’s systems were also completely renewed. Strong emphasis was placed on energy efficiency and future-proofing. Solar panels were installed on the roof, allowing Valina to take an important step toward sustainable energy generation. This comprehensive approach ensures that the building has not only been aesthetically improved but is also technically fully prepared for the demands of modern office accommodation.

Another important spatial intervention is the creation of three voids in the building. These voids provide additional daylight to the basement and mezzanine levels and improve the interconnection between different floors. This has significantly expanded the usage possibilities of these spaces and makes the building feel more open and inviting. Light and spatiality play a key role here.

For lighting in circulation areas and corridors, Meson Pro-C LED downlighters from Atomis were chosen. These fixtures provide calm, uniform lighting that contributes to orientation and safety without causing visual disturbance. Particularly in circulation areas, good lighting is crucial: it must be functional while also fitting within the overall architectural concept. The Meson Pro-C fixtures seamlessly align with this through their sleek design and high light quality.

Thanks to the combination of architectural interventions, renewed systems, and energy-efficient lighting, Valina meets the strictest sustainability requirements after renovation. The building has an A-label, making it not only attractive to tenants but also future-proof for the owner. Valina is therefore a good example of how existing office buildings can be successfully transformed into modern and sustainable buildings, where light plays a central role in experience and functionality.
