Project: Art Museum The Hague
Location: The Hague
Exhibition: Strandbeesten – A New Generation
Artist: Theo Jansen
Role: Lighting advice and collaborative exhibition design
Commissioned by Kunstmuseum Den Haag, we contributed ideas and provided lighting advice for the solo exhibition of Theo Jansen. An iconic exhibition centered around the world-famous Strandbeests, where art, technology, and movement converge.
The exhibition showcases impressive, skeletal-like constructions that move independently by wind power. Theo Jansen’s Strandbeesten regularly walk along the Hague coastline and enjoy international renown. His work travels the globe, forming a unique interplay of art, physics, and imagination.
A special part of the museum is Animaris Omnia, which has been on display in the Garden Room since 2018 and is part of the permanent collection. Additionally, the solo exhibition Strandbeesten – A New Generation offers an in-depth look at the latest developments in Jansen’s work.
For this exhibition, lighting was essential to highlight both the scale and the refined mechanics of the Strandbeesten. The lighting had to support the sculptures without disrupting their dynamics and movement. Through careful lighting advice, a balance was struck between drama, legibility, and spatial experience.
The lighting enhances the sculptural quality of the Strandbeesten, allowing visitors to experience the complex constructions up close. Visitors gain insight into both the aesthetic design and the ingenious functioning of these fascinating creatures.
A project where light plays a crucial role in telling the story behind one of the Netherlands’ most prominent artists.
