For the Apple Museum Utrecht, a unique museum dedicated to the history and innovations of Apple Inc., Atomis supplied the lighting that supports and enhances the entire visitor experience. The museum is located in the iconic The Wall complex in Leidsche Rijn and officially opened its doors in early April 2026, coinciding with Apple’s fiftieth anniversary.
This special project is all about experience, storytelling, and visual impact. Lighting plays an essential role here: not just to make objects visible, but primarily to bring stories to life.
The Apple Museum takes visitors on a journey through time and themes. From Steve Jobs’ iconic garage to the world-famous “Think Different” strategy: every part of the collection tells its own story.
The challenge for the lighting lay in creating a clear visual “signal path,” where each zone maintains its own atmosphere while remaining part of a single, cohesive experience. Carefully chosen light levels, contrasts, and color temperatures create a natural flow through the museum.
This not only enhances the collection but also the way visitors move through the space and experience the stories.
The exhibition design, created by Studio Daphne Jansen, requires lighting that subtly adapts to the various scenographies. From intimate presentations of historical objects to larger, visually powerful installations: every element requires a specific lighting approach.
Atomis provided a custom-made lighting concept for this, where flexibility and precision are central. By using high-quality LED solutions and smart positioning of fixtures, every object is optimally illuminated without compromising visual comfort or energy efficiency.
The realization of the Apple Museum was achieved in collaboration with Kloosterboer Decor, bringing together various disciplines to create a unique museum environment.
Internal communication shows that the final result has been very positively received. In the email Apple Museum, the project is described as a successful outcome where the lighting was implemented to full satisfaction and contributes to the desired look & feel of the museum.
For Atomis, this is once again a valuable addition to a growing portfolio of museum projects, where light plays a crucial role in storytelling.
As with all our projects, sustainable and future-proof solutions were chosen for the Apple Museum. The fixtures are designed with high-quality, reusable materials and offer a long lifespan with minimal maintenance requirements.
Efficient LED technology achieves low energy consumption without sacrificing light quality or flexibility. This aligns perfectly with both Atomis’s philosophy and Apple’s innovative and forward-thinking identity.
Museums require a different approach to lighting than standard office or retail environments. It’s not just about visibility, but about experience, contrast, emotion, and focus.
In the Apple Museum Utrecht, this project perfectly demonstrates how lighting can be used as a strategic part of the design. By using light as a connecting element, a clear, logical, and attractive whole is created where technology and storytelling converge.
