Climate ceilings and lighting: how to choose the right luminaires

A climate ceiling heats and cools through the ceiling - but where does the lighting go? We explain what to consider when choosing luminaires for climate and baffle ceilings.

Climate ceilings and lighting: how to choose the right luminaires

More and more offices and schools are choosing a climate ceiling: the ceiling heats and cools the space in a quiet, energy-efficient way. That places special demands on the lighting, because luminaires and the climate system share the same ceiling plane.

What is a climate ceiling?

A climate ceiling controls temperature through the ceiling instead of through separate radiators or air grilles. Water-carrying or metal elements absorb and release heat, for a comfortable and draught-free indoor climate. The lighting has to integrate seamlessly into this system.

Why luminaire choice matters

Because the ceiling actively exchanges heat, the position and type of luminaire are important. The lighting must not disturb the thermal performance and should integrate cleanly into the ceiling structure - often a baffle or metal system ceiling. A well-chosen luminaire blends visually into the ceiling and lets the climate system do its work.

Recessed, built-in or baffle?

Climate ceilings allow for various mounting types. Recessed luminaires sit neatly in the grid ceiling, built-in versions disappear into the ceiling structure, and special baffle versions (such as SAPP optics) match metal baffle ceilings. The right choice depends on the ceiling type and the desired light distribution.

Don't forget comfort and glare

In offices and at screen workstations especially, low-glare light is essential. Look for a low UGR value (<19) and a good optic - such as a lens-and-louver - so the light stays comfortable without reflections on screens. This combines a healthy indoor climate with pleasant light.

How Atomis helps

Atomis has several luminaire families specifically suited to climate and baffle ceilings, such as Avion, Vintare, Grid, Track and Oxo. They come in recessed and built-in versions, with low-glare optics and DALI-2 dimming, so light and climate work together effortlessly.
