Light for art: Atomis at Huis Marseille
At Huis Marseille, Amsterdam's Museum for Photography, light determines how you see a photograph and how long it is preserved. Together with 50LUX, Atomis provided the lighting for exhibitions including Memento.

Photography and light are inseparable. In a museum like Huis Marseille — housed in two stately 17th-century canal houses on the Keizersgracht — good lighting is therefore much more than atmosphere: it is a craft in its own right.

Why museum lighting demands such precision
A print has to be lit exactly right: enough to reveal every nuance, but never so bright that the fragile work suffers. That calls for luminaires with a high colour rendering for pure colours, precisely aimed beams to avoid stray light, and a controlled light level that protects the photographs.
A new lighting plan for every exhibition
Huis Marseille regularly changes its exhibitions, from Shadow Self to the recent Memento. Each presentation calls for its own light image — understated and high-contrast one time, open and even the next. Flexible, adjustable lighting makes it possible to set the right tone again and again.
In collaboration with 50LUX
The lighting design was created in close collaboration with 50LUX – Lichtontwerp & advies. Their expertise translated the atmosphere of each exhibition into a clear, considered plan. Atomis is proud that our lighting could contribute to it.
