Lighting for museums and exhibitions

In a museum, light does two things at once: it shows the work at its best and protects it from damage. That calls for precision, directed, colour-true and with a controlled light level.

Atomis supplies, often in collaboration with lighting designers, museum-grade lighting for exhibitions and permanent collections. Precisely aimable spots with a high colour rendering present every object optimally, without glare.

Lighting for museums and exhibitions

Colour-true and directed

A high colour rendering (Ra ≥ 90) and precisely aimable beams let colours and details come into their own.

Conservation first

Low, adjustable light levels and little UV/IR protect fragile materials such as paper, textiles and paintings.

Flexible per exhibition

Aimable and dimmable luminaires make it possible to set the right atmosphere for every new presentation.

Standards

Museum lighting follows conservation guidelines: the light level is matched to the material's light sensitivity (CIE guidelines). Indicative maximums:

Very sensitive (paper, textiles, watercolour)≤ 50 lux
Sensitive (oil paint, wood, leather, bone)≤ 150–200 lux
Less sensitive (metal, stone, glass, ceramics)≤ 300 lux
Colour renderingRa ≥ 90
UV radiationas low as possible (< 10 µW/lm)

Besides the light level, the total annual light dose (lux-hours) matters. Final values are set per object and exhibition.
